Found in Translation graduate speaks on CCHI Community Conversations panel
On February 26th, Found in Translation graduate Wilda Perez CHI™-Spanish spoke as a panelist at an event hosted by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) on how racism and white supremacy continue to systemically marginalize Black immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. The event was very engaging and many attendees stayed overtime to continue listening to the thoughtful comments made by panelists.
When reflecting on how being Black affects her work as an interpreter, Wilda expressed a desire for more representation in the interpreting profession, saying:
“We need more visibility, and we need to really demonstrate how diverse the Latino community is…I have had patients be in an appointment with me after I introduce myself and not pay attention to the doctor and what I am interpreting because they are looking at me and they are trying to figure out where I am from and why I speak Spanish.”
Thank you Wilda for sharing your insight and experience, and for the shout out to Found in Translation’s work and mission!
